Nietzsche on Classics and Classicists

ok. here's something that might become at least a semi-regular feature. all of these are taken from selections translated by william arrowsmith in volumes 2.1 and 2.2 of arion (1963). i make no evaluative judgments herein (at least for now): feel free to do so in the comments section. this first excerpt strikes me as a fitting place to begin.

The Greeks are interesting and quite excessively important because they have such an abundance of great individuals. How was that possible? The question deserves study.
