This Just In: Pandora's 'Box' Actually a Jar!
Nisbet-Hubbard on Horace Odes 1.3.29:
Pandora is surprisingly little mentioned in classical literature; her 'box' was really a huge jar or pithos, mistranslated by Erasmus in his Adagia as pyxis.
No, I don't think it's 'actually news', especially not in the most literal sense of the word. Pandora's vessel is usually referred to as a 'box', and I thought the note was interesting in that regard vis-a-vis Erasmus' mistranslation.
Not to burst your bubble, but is this actually news? I've known for years that it was a jar.
